Photograph of Gasthaus Aescher Wildkirchli by Alex Nichol

Gasthaus Aescher Wildkirchli

On day five of my motorcycle tour across Europe, I took a short break from the road, hiking instead to the top of Ebenalp, northernmost summit of the Appenzell Alps in Switzerland.

Midway up, a short walk from the cablecar station, I came upon Gasthaus Aescher Wildkirchli, a 19th century inn built into the side of the mountain. It's been standing since 1860 and is one of the oldest mountain guesthouses in Switzerland.

Although there wasn't any live music on the morning I was there, I was able to enjoy a cold beer and a slice of Apfelstrudel on the terrace overlooking the iconic Seealpsee below.

This photograph was taken with my Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and the extraordinary Canon 35 mm f/1.4 L II USM .
