Staubbach Falls

The fourth stop on my motorcycle tour across Europe brought me to Lauterbrunnen, a cute little village wedged within a rocky cravasse, deep in the Swiss Alps.

The village is famous for it's 300m high Staubbach waterfall that appears to cascade into the village itself from the cliffs above. This is the second time I've been here, but last time it was shrouded in thick fog.

The falls look much better from a distance, but if you're intending to take photographs of it, I'd recommend arriving before lunchtime in the summer months, so that you don't get the sun behind it

Of course, there's more to Lauterbrunnen than just the waterfall. The place is beautiful, and has a great rail network from which to explore the Jungfrau region (aka "the top of Europe").

It's also worth going a little further down the valley to Trümmelbachfälle a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain. About 20,000 litres of ice-cold melt-water pass through it every second, which you can witness firsthand thanks to the tunnel funicular that has been running since 1913.
